Our Production Site in Brno: Expertise Built on Tradition
The medac production site in Brno has a history that spans more than 70 years. Originally founded in the 1950s under the name Lachema, the site expanded into in-vitro diagnostics in the 1960s and began producing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the 1980s.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the site was part of several global pharmaceutical groups, including PLIVA, Barr Pharmaceuticals and later TEVA. At its peak, it was a fully FDA-certified, vertically integrated facility producing APIs, oral solid forms and injectables for global markets. As part of a strategic reorganisation, the site was closed by TEVA in 2009.
A Longstanding Partnership
medac’s connection to Brno dates back to the 1990s, when Lachema supplied medac with injectable products — the start of a strong and lasting CDMO partnership. In 2010, a team of former PLIVA experts joined forces with medac to acquire the site’s injectable manufacturing operations and founded a new company: oncomed manufacturing, a medac company. The site started with two GMP-certified vial filling lines, supported by state-of-the-art quality control and warehousing services. Over time, production capacity expanded, the product portfolio grew, and contract manufacturing for third-party partners became a key focus.
Innovation and Growth
In 2018, the site took another strategic step by introducing a single-use systems platform for clinical solutions. By 2021, the team had grown to over 200 dedicated professionals. In 2024, the site reached a new milestone with the GMP approval of a third production line — this time for pre-filled syringes, opening new potential in a dynamic growth segment.
